Frankfurter Positionen 2019
A Place in the Sun

In the course of Indian Day in New Orleans, Afro-American dancers throng the streets in extravagant attire, dressed as Native American chiefs. In this way they recall the hospitality and readiness to help shown to runaway slaves by some of these tribes. In Namibia surviving Herero men celebrate their independence by dancing in a parade after donning officers’ costumes in the tradition of warriors, adorned with the attributes of the vanquished foes.

In A Place in the Sun the photographer Nicolas Henry, director and actor Gora Diakhaté, costume designer Coumba Diase and actor Mohamed Aroussi investigate on the basis of these two types of ceremonial events how the language of costume and clothing serves as a means of understanding the other, the foreign. A Place in the Sun in Frankfurt was a further instalment of Henry’s project KITIHAWA’S CHANDELIER, from which he will also be showing selected works in Galerie Parisa Kind (from 29 January).
