Sharing Practice: Nicki and Yujin Park
Part of "Islands of Connecting Tissue"

A large, asymetrical net like an island fills the room ...

In ISLANDS OF CONNECTING TISSUE we invite you to performative gatherings and to share artistic practices with each other: in open workhshop formats - sharing practices - we inspire each other and learn from each other under the instruction of various artists, who bring their current practices. From 5. - 7. April there will be two sharing practices per day, plus the premiere of the music theater SIRENS OF THE O by and with Jasmina Rezig and Marja Christians. On 5. April the oceanographer Ina Nagler will be there for an artist talk afterwards.

Part. 1
Every year, 250,000 deer and wild boar are killed on Germany’s roads. The number of small animals like hedgehogs or martens that fall victim cannot even be counted. Most of them remain unnoticed in the roadside ditches. We drove patrols and collected their remains, taking them to natural places with less perils. At their final resting place, they remind us of our action's consequences. And they become the nutrient base for new generations. Countless living creatures feed on carrion, many are specialized in this. In Germany alone, there are 22 species of carrion beetles.
A livestream now makes us witnesses to their disappearance. Soon there will be nothing left. A still life that doesn’t stand still. A vanitas motif teeming with life.

Part. 2
If you look at agricultural tools, a comparison with weapons is not far-fetched: sharp blades and pointed ends on each handle. Must people wage war against the soil to adapt it to their own needs? Using these tools, they prepare it for a few protected plants only and thus inscribe themselves into it.
What could a tool, that does not violently reshape the soil, but instead makes the mechanisms of mutual influence visible, look like? The material research brings the visitors into an experiential space between the human, the environment and the unrecognized actors of the soil. Unwanted soil from the construction sites is used as the recycled basis for the installation and source of the tools and blurs the boundaries between human activity and natural raw materials.
